"Het onderwijssysteem in Belgisch Congo was een van de vlaggenschepen van het koloniale bewind. België mocht in het bijzonder fier zijn op het feit dat brede lagen van de bevolking bereikt werden door een netwerk van hoofdzakelijk door katholieke missionarissen geleide scholen. Eerst in de breedte, vooraleer in de diepte te kunnen werken, zo heette het.Was het echt zo breed, en waarom was het niet diep ? Hoe werkte dat koloniaal onderwijs in de praktijk? Waren er sterke verschillen, of net veel gelijkenissen met de klaspraktijk in het moederland ? En kunnen we daar eigenlijk nog achter komen, hoe het nu precies was op de koloniale school ?Dit boek is het resultaat van een onderzoek naar de pedagogische praktijk in de scholen van het missiegebied van de Missionarissen van het Heilig Hart, in de Evenaarsprovincie in Belgisch Congo. Op basis van uitgebreid bronnenonderzoek wordt geschetst in welke institutionele context dit onderwijs plaatsvond, wat de premissen waren waarmee de vormgevers van dit onderwijs, de missionarissen hun taak aanvatten, hoe de scholen en het lesgeven praktisch georganiseerd werden, en wat de leidende principes waren die eraan ten grondslag lagen. Tenslotte probeert deze studie ook een nieuw licht op de lange termijn effecten van het koloniaal onderwijs, door een aantal betrokkenen aan het woord te laten.‘Als Kongo op de schoolbank wil’ daalt af naar de werkvloer, naar het micro-historische niveau, en vertelt over een essentieel stukje koloniale geschiedenis, vanuit het perspectief van de betrokkenen.

In the first half of the twentieth century, a distinctive kind of architecture appeared across Europe and North America, characterized by stripped, plain, often pure white walls; wide windows; flat roofs; and prominent balconies, terraces and roof gardens. From houses to hospitals, this architecture was frequently constructed from steel and reinforced concrete and featured large expanses of glass. Paul Overy takes a fresh look at the geometric forms and sparkling surfaces of the new architecture. He explores the preoccupations of the period with air and sunshine, space, health, hygiene and whiteness, and how, together with the utopian notions of "the clean machine" and the model factory, these concerns became fundamental to the development of new architectural and design practices.
